 Formation Springs
Preserve
The unique geology of this area makes it a fascinating stop on
the byway. In 1989, 160-acres surrounding Formation Springs was
turned into a preserve. The preserve features crystal pools and a
wetland complex at the base of Aspen Mountain.
The terraced pools at Formation Springs are
formed by cold springs that feed into them and deposit high
concentrations of calcium carbonate. The pools are a place to stay
for wintering wildlife, and provide a natural point of interest both
geologically and biologically. The preserve also include Formation
Cave that stretches for 500 feet.
